Wanderlust Trading Co | Hobart
Megan Aldous is a lot like a superhero. Her daytime, Clark Kent, alter ego is a lawyer. However her real passion, and superpowers, lie in her abilities as the owner and curator of her shop Wanderlust Trading Co. She’s saving people’s lives one wardrobe dilemma at a time!
After years of dreaming and planning Megan opened Wanderlust Trading Co in April 2015. Long before opening the doors she had been engaging her style powers and sourcing amazing brands to stock in her shop. Brands like Spell Byron Bay, By Johnny, and Auguste. Megan is inspired by beautiful, beachy, boho styles that suit Tasmanian life so well. She also loves elegant and feminine styling, and believes in good quality, timeless pieces that can be worn over and over again.
What I love about shopping at Wanderlust Trading Co is the mixture of styles. I can always find something amazing when I need it; and the way Megan has managed to weave all these styles together is nothing short of incredible! Looking through the racks you’ll find gorgeous, floaty floral pieces right next to a pair of distressed denim jeans, and an elegant black dress.
Megan’s aesthetic and styling skills extend beyond the clothes and into the whole shop. She has created a relaxing, boho inspired retail space in the heart of central Hobart. From the solid, rough sawn shelving, to the beaded chandeliers and concrete counter, everything flows just right. She even burns scented candles so the space smells amazing too! And there is always a lovely assistant available to greet you with a warm smile and help you find the perfect item.
When I asked Megan what her inspiration for the shop was, she quoted the writer Victoria Erickson -
“If you ever find yourself empty from something you cannot know or name, find a stretch of ocean, a field, or a mountainside, or even clouds or trees.
Because there are a thousand simple ways to fill your tired soul so you can remember how to be, how to see, and most importantly, how to breathe.”
She went on to explain that for her “wanderlust evokes the sense of a timeless, graceful, and adventurous soul”.
Megan’s reason for opening the store was to give herself a creative outlet. It’s very much become an expression of herself and those things that inspire her. Despite all of this, she cites her favourite aspect of the shop as the amazing opportunities for friendship it has created, and her sense of gratitude that there are so many, often unexpected, people willing to help you when you take a leap of faith - like opening your own business. I think that’s pretty super indeed!
