Welcome to my blog.

On these pages you will find snippets from my life in Tasmania, and information about the best things to visit, see, and do, on the island.

Hobart Twilight Market | Sandy Bay

Hobart Twilight Market, the name itself sounds evocative and magical - and it lives up to it’s name. It might be its proximity to the beach but Hobart Twilight Market has the most wonderful, laid back vibe. Market goers and stallholders alike are always happy and relaxed. Or maybe the picturesque beach front location is to blame for all the chill? Situated at Sandy Bay’s Long Beach, Hobart Twilight Market creates a unique opportunity to enjoy dinner and post work drinks on a friday night, whilst watching the sun set and the moon rise over the ocean.

Have I convinced you to visit yet?

There's a fantastic range of stallholders from which you can buy fresh vegetables, fresh cut flowers, Tasmanian made gifts and homewares, jewelry, vintage clothing, and much much more. What I really love though is the range of Tasmanian food, wine, beer, and cider. There's always such a great selection, and it’s a wonderful treat to spread out on the lawns and have a picnic style dinner with the vast array of delicious things on offer.

The market has the most wonderfully inclusive ethos. Personally one of my favourite aspects of the market is that it’s dog friendly. My best friend Klaus gets to come along and hang out with me on the lawns. They've got water bowls set up so pets don't have to go thirsty, and there are always plenty of other puppies around to say hello to. There's even a vet nurse set up on site and a doggy treat stall in case you want to spoil your best mate.

I love that Klaus gets to join me at the market!

If you've got babies of the non-fur variety there are plenty of activities for them too. The market’s location is directly next to an amazing playground, they usually have Tazorbs set up (see the photo below, it looks crazy fun), and often have face painting and other activities available.

The team behind the Hobart Twilight Market are Justin Davies, Matt Wise, and Lisa Kluver. The team put a lot of time and effort into planning the market and the results speak for themselves. It was eight years ago that Justin Davies first thought of the Twilight Market idea. In 2013 he roped in Matt Wise and the two of them battled an 18 month approval process to get the Hobart Twilight Market up and running. After such a process the team was overjoyed to find their very first market a success. In fact so many people attended that there was traffic chaos on Sandy Bay Road.

They have since bedded down their parking and traffic congestion issues and the Hobart Twilight Market continues to grow in many ways. They have recently divulged information regarding expansion of the market at a brand new site at Macquarie Wharf in Sullivans Cove. Keep your eyes peeled for further information as it’s released! They encourage people to ride their bike to the market (Sandy Bay has fantastic bike lane facilities), as well as encouraging fitness more broadly. Some evenings there are yoga sessions offered, and there are always healthy food options available. On the night I visited the Hawthorn Football Club happened to be attending!

The Hobart Twilight Market really is unique and special. My own connection to this market is particularly special as it was the backdrop when David proposed to me. The market had become a regular Friday night tradition for us so when he sent me off to get oysters, claiming he would wait on the beach with Klaus. I didn’t suspect a thing. Little did I know that he had the most beautiful surprise of my life set up for me on the sand on Nutgrove beach! French champagne, candles, fairy lights, and the one I love on bended knee in a suit - Hobart Twilight Market is indeed firmly set in my heart as a place filled with wonderful memories.

The Hobart Twilight Market can be found at Sandy Bay’s Long Beach once a fortnight on a Friday. The hours are 4pm - 8:30pm over the summer daylight savings period, October - March.

See you there!

Tickleback Ridge Wines lured me in at my very first market with their suits and bow ties. I'm not sure what's happened to their snappy dressing but I still get their wine without fail.
