Welcome to my blog.

On these pages you will find snippets from my life in Tasmania, and information about the best things to visit, see, and do, on the island.

Willing Bros. Wine Merchants | North Hobart

I know I’m not alone when I say Sunday afternoons often feel tainted with the sour taste of monday morning. Thankfully Tasmania has Carl Windsor and James Kingston to ensure this ailment is overcome. Literally the two best names in the business (Kingston and Windsor..?), these two have created a way to make all your Sunday afternoon cares fade away in the form of Sunday Roasts at their wine bar, Willing Bros. Wine Merchants

With nearly half a century of experience between them you know Willing Bros. is going to be spot on. It’s an unapologetic ode to a good tipple. Kingston’s domain is the incredible selection of Tasmanian, interstate, and foreign wines, spirits, and beers. I suspect even the most discerning of drinkers will find something to their taste here. It’s Windsor who deftly creates the menu to match. This is a selection of rustic small dishes made from seasonal fare.

On a recent Sunday afternoon David and I put on our finest and headed out the door. Our destination was Willing Bros. for their famous Sunday Roast. Nothing says soul food more. We were excited. On the menu was french onion soup (complete with grilled cheese) to start, and slow cooked roast lamb shoulder as the main event - sou vide for many hours, then browned off in the pan. To accompany we had crispy, golden roast potatoes, tiny pumpkin scones, gravy, witlof salad, and mashed parsnip puree. I matched my lunch with a glass of Chatto 2015 Pinot Noir (ok, maybe a couple of glasses).

We had such an enjoyable afternoon thanks to Willing Bros. There was something a bit special about having a late lunch. I suppose, in contrast to a brunch, I was able to have a productive day, then treat myself to an incredible meal, and still have the afternoon and evening ahead of me. The atmosphere in the bar is so great - they have really diverse, loyal clientele. You could bring your parents, or a first date, Willing Bros. would be suitable for either.

Just make sure you do visit. It’s a real treat!

Shout out to the fantastic staff!!
